Obituary

Myrna Angeline Schmidt passed away at the age of 89 on October 2, 2026, in Bozeman, Montana.

Myrna was born on July 6, 1937, in Carroll, Iowa, to Clem and Hazel Koster. After graduating from high school in Breda, Iowa, she attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa, where she earned an associate degree in elementary education.

While teaching in Holstein, Iowa, Myrna met the love of her life, Van, at a local dance hall in Storm Lake, Iowa. They married on August 20, 1960, and settled in Sioux City, where Myrna continued teaching until the birth of their first child in 1962. Over the next 13 years, Van and Myrna welcomed four additional children into the family and lived in seven different cities. In 1975 they settled in Three Forks, Montana, when they purchased the local Gambles hardware store.

In Three Forks, Myrna helped in the hardware store, worked as a substitute teacher, and raised their five children. She loved sewing, quilting, baking delicious treats, and gardening. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and playing games, particularly cards. Myrna was active in the local quilting group and was a member of the women's golf league.

Myrna is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Van Schmidt; her five children, Darryl Schmidt (Sandy), Laura Rahe (Randy), Barbara Loewen (Steve), Brad Schmidt (Judy), and Gary Schmidt (Donna); 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 24, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Parish in Three Forks. A graveside committal service will follow at Fairview Cemetery. The family welcomes you to join them for a luncheon at Holy Family Parish immediately after the burial.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Holy Family Parish.
