Obituary

David Arnold Rieder passed away June 22, 2026, at his home in Boulder.

David was born on October 20, 1937, in Peoria, Illinois to Arnold and Floy Rieder.

At age 4 the family moved to Boulder to start a life of ranching. As a young man he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and any and all sports. Dave graduated from Jefferson High School in 1955.He attended MSU receiving a bachelors in English and Education. In 1961 he served in the Peace Corps.

In June of 1967 he married Alice Mothershead. They started their journey in Boulder taking a few detours with his coaching/teaching/outfitting careers via Florence, Roberts, Red Lodge, Gardiner and Yaak. In 1974 they made their way back to Boulder settling into a life that he was meant to live and absolutely loved on the Rieder Ranch. He along with Alice instilled appreciation of everything in life with his kids Heath, Brooke, Heidi, and Clinton.

To say David lived a full life would be an understatement. All while running a ranch, he served on the school board, Juvenile Probation Officer, Hunters Safety Instructor, an exceptional coach, poet, world traveler, family chauffeur, and quite the karaoke singer. He was also interesting enough to be interviewed by CNN's John King, amongst others.

He was an incredible cattleman. He deeply cared about his herd and shepherded his land with compassion and care.

Dave loved to compete and watch sports. He could tell you everything from who held which world record in track and field to how many points he and his brother scored in a game against Twin Bridges decades ago. Undoubtedly, the sport he enjoyed the most was any that his grandkids were in.

But mostly, Dave loved his family. He always served as their hype man and always supported them in all aspects of life. Especially his wife. In his eyes, there was literally no one that could compare to her. (Especially when it came to her cooking)

Shipping and branding will never be the same.
