Glen Walter Schroeder

Glen Walter Schroeder was born December 10, 1949, in Hallock, Minn., and raised in nearby Pembina, N.D. After completing a degree in forestry at the North Dakota School of Forestry in Bottineau and serving in the U.S. Marine Corps at Quantico, Va., Glen moved to Williston, N.D., where he worked as a technician for Bell Telephone. It was there that he met a beautiful young woman named Jean Lindseth; they were married in June 1972. In October 1977, Glen joined the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) and the couple relocated to San Diego, Calif. While there, the family would grow to include two sons, Daniel and Justin.

Over the course of 30 years of distinguished service with the U.S. Border Patrol, Glen’s career would take the family from San Diego to Plentywood and Havre, Mont.; Tucson, Ariz.; and, ultimately, Grand Forks, N.D., where he served as Chief Patrol Agent of the Grand Forks Sector from January 2000 until his retirement in December 2006. He remained busy after his retirement, serving as a border security advisor overseas in Tbilisi, Georgia; as a Mentor for developing USBP leaders; and as a background investigator.

Glen and Jeannie first discovered the Ennis area on their honeymoon in the summer of 1972. Glen would return each Fall over the following decades to hunt elk. After his retirement, they chose to make the area their home and became active in the community. Both were Members of the local Lions Club for which Glen served a year as chapter president. He thoroughly enjoyed his Friday morning breakfasts at Yesterdays Restaurant with his fellow ROMEOs, his Cowboy Action shoots, and his regular Monday shifts at Shedhorn Sports where he became known as “Glen the Gun Man” for his lifelong enthusiasm for and expertise with firearms.

Glen was an avid hunter and fisherman – he took great pride in his successful grizzly bear hunt in Russia – as well as an aficionado of westerns, particularly those with John Wayne. He was also a member of numerous organizations advocating sporting, conservation, and preservation of the Second Amendment.

Glen passed away of natural causes on Saturday, October 9, at the family home near Cameron. He is survived by Jean, his wife of 49 years; two sons: Daniel of Washington, D.C., and Justin of Bozeman; sister, Maxine Schroeder of Bozeman; and brother, Howard Schroeder of Carlsbad, Calif. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Lillie, and stepfather, Dan Collins.

A celebration of life will take place on Saturday. October 23, at 4:00 p.m. at the Ennis Rodeo Grounds and is open to all. To his many friends, far and wide, he sends a fond “Vaya con Dios, amigo, until we meet again!”
